I like this way of summing up the tension. If I'm reading you right, as far as our status in union with Christ, we are saints, NOT sinners. As far as our daily practice as saints with indwelling sin, we are simultaneously sinners AND saints. Saint/sinner reality is huge in the battle with sin. Though, I still think it's fine as you alluded to with Paul, to refer to ourselves as sinners so long as we don't negate our true status in Jesus.
